Henry was born in Gloucestershire, England, the second son of General Tilney and his wife. Growing up at the family's ancestral home of Northanger Abbey, Henry's childhood was not exactly idyllic. Though he had a loving mother and two siblings -- Frederick and Eleanor -- with whom he was always close (Eleanor in particular), the General was an overbearing presence in the family's life. His greed and selfishness put a strain on the children, a problem that only worsened with the death of Mrs. Tilney. As the second son, standing to inherit a much smaller fortune, Henry became a clergyman, and eventually took a living at Woodston, a parish about 20 miles from Northanger.
